Turning industrial solid waste into valuable resources: How can thermo-mechanical treatment technologies help achieve “zero-waste factories”?

When industrial solid waste is mentioned, the first things that come to mind are land occupation due to landfilling and environmental pollution. However, in the petrochemical and machinery industries, a new technology known as thermomechanical treatment is transforming oil-containing solid waste from an “environmental burden” into a “recyclable resource.”

Key Science Communication Point: What are oil-based drill cuttings, and how should they be treated?

Oil-based drill cuttings are oil-contaminated waste generated during oil and gas drilling operations; if not properly treated, they can contaminate soil and water resources. Conventional treatment methods are costly and offer limited effectiveness, whereas new thermal-mechanical treatment equipment provides a highly efficient solution.

Core principle: High-temperature treatment of solid waste is carried out in a sealed chamber by utilizing friction-generated heat or an external heat source.

Process: Mechanical shearing generates heat, causing the crude oil in oil-based drill cuttings to volatilize and crack; the resulting oil and gas are then condensed and liquefied via a condensation system for recovery and reuse as fuel or chemical feedstock.

Final disposition: Residue meets standards, resources are recycled.

After treatment, the residual solid residue contains extremely low oil content, meeting relevant national environmental protection discharge standards and can be safely stockpiled or used as backfill material in construction. Meanwhile, the recovered oil products achieve 100% resource recovery and recycling. The widespread adoption of this technology marks a significant shift in the field of industrial solid-waste resource utilization—from passive remediation to proactive circularity.
